Los Angeles Community College District Awards More Than $2 Million in Contracts to Local Businesses for Campus Improvements

Contracts will bring two new construction projects to Los Angeles Mission and Valley Colleges, funded in part by the voter-approved $2.2 billion Proposition A/AA Bond program

March 16, 2007 (LOS ANGELES) The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) announced today that its Board of Trustees awarded local businesses $2,006,303 in construction contracts recently for two new projects:  a new parking structure that will utilize solar panels at Los Angeles Mission College; and new security cameras on the Men's PE Building at West Los Angeles College. Each contract is the result of formal competitive bidding and will receive funding from the Proposition A/AA Bond program, the $2.2 billion bond measures overwhelmingly approved by Los Angeles voters in 2001 and 2003.

“The Los Angeles Community Colleges continue to progress towards the end goal of modernized campuses that will meet the needs of our communities,” said Georgia Mercer, the newly-elected president of the LACCD Board of Trustees.  "Local businesses are, and will continue to play an important role in helping us achieve this."

LACCD’s Board of Trustees authorized the following construction contracts on March 7, 2007:

Los Angeles Mission College:  ICON West, Inc., a local business based in Los Angeles will receive $1,991,323 to construct a new Parking Structure with rooftop Photovoltaic system.  The project includes a four-level, new parking structure to provide 1,220 parking spaces, and will have a photovoltaic system (also known as solar panels) on the roof of the structure that will convert energy from the sun into electricity to use for the College's energy needs.

Los Angeles Valley College:  The Trustees authorized a contract with HCI, Inc., a local business based in Los Angeles, to provide construction services to install security cameras on the Men's PE Building for $14,980.  This project includes the mounting of security cameras on the Men's PE Building to overlook the athletic field complex.

The Los Angeles Community College District, one of the largest community college districts in the country, has embarked on a $2.2 billion construction and modernization program at its nine colleges.  The LACCD has contracted 86 percent of the construction program's work to date to local, small, emerging or disabled-veteran enterprise businesses.  Companies interested in participating in this $2.2 billion renovation and modernization program are encouraged to visit www.PropositionA.org and click on “Doing Business with Us.”
