- The new S. Mark Taper Botanical Garden at Pierce College will include an array of Mediterranean plants, including Australian and South African-native shrubs.
- The College's garden will also include many Southern Californian native plants, making it a sustainable garden that is drought-resistant.
- The new Botanical Garden will offer many benefits to the Pierce College campus:
- Outdoor botanical laboratory for biology students
- Demonstrate how incorporating plants from all over the world can help to decrease our dependence on water
- Exhibit the beauty and viability of drought resistant plants in our region's climate
- The project construction for the botanical garden includes:
- Landscaping and irrigation
- Hardscape (patios, retaining walls, and walkways)
- Shade structures o Botanical plant signage
- Winding concrete walkway called the ''Evolution Walk," which will be stamped with fossil images along the path
- The College unveiled the first phase of the Botanical Garden three years ago. Current construction will complete the second and final phase of the garden.
- The work area for the second phase of the garden is 47,700 sq. ft. The entire Botanical Garden area is approximately 80,300 sq. ft.
