“Breaking Ground, Opening Doors and Realizing Our Future” This is an important time of year for our students as they reach a special and significant As we join with our graduates in celebration, it’s also important to realize the great progress being made in modernizing our campuses. In the past six months, we have celebrated more than five ground breakings and dedication ceremonies. Under a sunny sky, Trade Tech College kicked off the demolition of buildings that sit on the future site of the largest project of the proposition A/AA bond program - Trade's South Campus project. The so-called PTA Building and former site of the Apffel's Coffee Company - were successfully purchased by the District after long and complex negotiations. It is a major milestone for the campus and a major component of the Proposition A/AA Bond Program. The South Campus project will provide students with two new five-story classroom buildings, a new athletic field and underground parking. This is the latest in a series of projects that will transform Trade-Tech, creating an environment worthy of our talented faculty and motivated students. Later in June, we will dedicate a beautiful new athletic field at Valley College and launch Harbor College’s new marquee buildings. At all nine community college campuses, projects continue to transform our learning institutions into state-of-the-art colleges which will better serve our students, faculty and staff for decades to come. We have a lot to be proud of. There is no doubt that we are making great progress in realizing our ambitious goals and demonstrating to voters who overwhelmingly passed these bonds, that the funds are being well spent and making a difference in the lives of our students. As we continue to break ground on our construction projects and open doors to new buildings, I invite everyone to join us in celebrating our great success and amazing progress. Larry Eisenberg |

| LACCD Hosts Panel on Renewable Energy Solutions |
On May 18th, the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) hosted “Greening
L.A. by 2010:
Renewable Energy Solutions,” a program and panel discussion addressing concepts that support energy conservation strategies. California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) president, Michael Peevey served as the keynote speaker for the event.
The program addressed the importance of renewable energy as a solution to the "greening" of Los Angeles by 2010. Peevey discussed the State's renewable energy
program and how it applies to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP)
and the districts it serves. Both the CPUC and LADWP are working toward the
aggressive goal of increasing renewable energy sources to 20% by 2010.
Larry
Eisenberg, executive director of Facilities Planning and Development for LACCD
and Nancy Pearlman, member, Board of Trustees for LACCD, both participated as
members of the panel for discussions following Peevey's keynote address. David
Nahai, vice president of the Board of Commissioners for L.A. Department of Water
and Power, also took part in the panel discussion.
The District is also working toward self-producing 25 percent of its energy
needs through its sustainable energy efforts, with 10 percent of that need
utilizing photovoltaic cells.
| Flex Your Power Award for Excellence in Adopting Energy Efficiency Technologies Presented to LACCD |
The Los
Angeles Community College District (LACCD) was honored for its commitment to
incorporating
sustainable energy technologies with a "Flex Your Power" award.
Flex Your Power, California's statewide energy efficiency campaign, presented
the award during the Board of Water and Power
Commissioners meeting. LACCD Board of Trustees President Sylvia Scott-Hayes
accepted the award on behalf of the District.
“It’s great to receive this award from Flex Your Power, as it recognizes that we
are in the midst of one of the largest public-sector green-building projects in
the nation, ” said Larry Eisenberg, executive director of facilities planning
and development for LACCD.
In 2005, LACCD was also recognized by Flex Your Power as one of seven recipients
for its award in Education and Leadership for the District's efforts in adopting
energy efficiency measures. LACCD's nine colleges are transforming their
campuses by adopting energy efficient technologies, and are part of the
District's green building campaign.
| Meet Fred Gans, Program Director for the LACCD Bond Construction Program |
With more than 35 years of experience and an in-depth knowledge of Los
Angeles and the County’s higher education communities, Fred Gans, a Los Angeles native, helps lead the LACCD’s $2.2 billion bond construction program, as the Program Director for the DMJM/JGM program management team.
Gans is no stranger to college projects. He was program director for California State Northridge’s $407 million reconstruction after the 1994 Northridge earthquake. He also managed the DMJM Management team at USC where they were brought on to conduct seismic damage surveys, estimates and design recommendations for the numerous buildings affected by the same earthquake.
“LACCD has every right to be proud of this construction project,” said Gans. “Already, it has earned efficiency awards, glowing audit reports and is on the fast track to celebrate groundbreaking and ribbon cutting for new buildings at all nine campuses." The District’s commitment to utilizing sustainable design and construction techniques not only enhances the buildings and increases efficiency, but exposes architects, contractors, and vendors to cutting-edge sustainable design and construction practices.”
Gans is a successful manager and highly respected by his staff. His warm personality and commitment to excellence has allowed him to lead a variety of complex projects across the globe, from the landmark Capitol Bank of Commerce office building in Sacramento, to King Fahd Medical City in Saudi Arabia.
